AE timeline in Flash

Apr 23, 2005   //   by Tuomas Artman   //  No Comments

I could not help noticing quiet a few posts on other blogs that have the same item on their wish-lists for the Adobe+Macromedia company: Implement the After Effects timeline into the Flash IDE.

I must say that I’m not at all convinced if this would be a good thing. When i started to use Flash 2 I was doing loads of Director work, and I was absolutely frustrated by the Flash timeline. My heart took a leap when Adobe announced Live Motion. I thought exactly the same thing: Wow, Flash with a After Effects timeline. After playing with Live Motion for a while I was happy to get back to my now beloved Flash timeline, and I still think although nothing has happened to the it since Flash 5 (except for folders…) that the timeline does it’s job really well. LiveMotion never managed to convince me with it’s implementation of the AE timeline. I guess the AE timeline works only if you don’t have to do any frame-by-frame animations or have multiple objects on one keyframe.

3 gold, 5 honours

Last night twenty or so of us went to the Grand One-gala to see how we managed to compete against other agencies in Finland’s biggest digital media competition.

Well, we really did great! Out of a total of 36 nominations, 11 were our works. In the end we won three of the nine categories, and received a total of five honours.

Photoshop export

Apr 18, 2005   //   by Tuomas Artman   //  1 Comment

While waiting for Flash to integrate with Photoshop (if ever, we’ve not yet heard the final word from the U.S. government or shareholders), here are two PS actions
that I use quiet frequently.

Simply select "Load Actions" from your Photoshop Actions Panel menu and point the the file.

You’ve probably at some point exported a semitransparent PNG from Photoshop to Flash. The basic method – creating a new document, moving the layer to be exported to the new document, cropping and saving – is quiet time-consuming. I got fed up with this while having to export tens of layers, so I created these little actions. They simply take the selected layer and save it as a 24-Bit transparent PNG. It’s doing all the cropping (adding a safe region of two pixels in case you want to break the bitmap apart) and there’s one actions for saving layers with effects and one for saving simple effect-less layers.

The resulting cropped layer is exported to C:Export.png but you can define your own export path by double-clicking the Export-command within both actions.

Enjoy.

Adobe buys Macromedia

Read all about it here.

Way to go! We’ll finnaly see Photoshop and Flash working hand in hand. No doubt that GoLive and Fireworks are the first products to be axed from the new lineup.

Gold, Silver and honours

Apr 8, 2005   //   by Tuomas Artman   //  No Comments

What a night…

A bunch of us attended the "Vuoden Huiput"-gala last evening (annual advertising and graphic design competition).

We received gold for the "Tästä elämästä 24h"-campaign produced in co-operation with Hasan & Partners and silver for Nylanderi.fi. If that was not enough, we also received a honourable mention for "Tuntematon sotilas 50v".

The advertising people in Finland are known to throw very moist parties, and gold and silver in our pockets we gladly joined the celebration.
