Smallest WindowsXP portable

Aug 26, 2005   //   by Tuomas Artman   //  1 Comment

Huh, the Japanese did it again (or is it the Koreans this time?)! The worlds smallest Windows XP-running gadget – the OQO Model 1 – weighs a little under 400 g.

Makes you wonder when machines will take over the world. In just a little over 15 years we’ve come from the first mobile (?) phone – the Nokia Mobira (using analog NMT), with a weight of about 5 kilos (a friend of mine just bought one for 3€, hehe) to this little OQO beauty making Skype phone calls over WIFI.

Eclipse with FDT

Aug 22, 2005   //   by Tuomas Artman   //  2 Comments

Just installed FDT and must say it looks very promising. I’ve always felt drawn to eclipse, but have not had a chance to use it at work, since I don’t do a lot of Java work, and thought ASDT (still en pre-alpha) was not mature enough.

Be sure to check out FDT if you do any Flash programming. I just would have hoped for UML-roundtripping, but maybe they’ll add that in the next version.

  • Do you still use FDT ? Jus wordering if I should reinstall ASDT or buy FDT.
I think I like it more, but… you have more experience. ;)

  • Hi. No, I’ve switched to FlashDevelop, since its free. But do give FDT a try, it’s still fabulous.

RIA – small things matter

Aug 14, 2005   //   by Tuomas Artman   //  2 Comments

A friend of mine told me a great real-life example of how RIA’s can help companies save money – without doing anything too fancy, really.

He was looking at a internal web application used by a lot of people. I don’t remember if it was a HRM application or a software license management app, but it really does not matter. The thing was, that for some reason the app was used by a lot – counting both the number of users as well as time spend by those users. The apps main section is a long page with lots of drop-down menus.  Each drop-down selection affects possible values for other drop-downs, thus requiring a refresh of the whole page after each drop-down selection.

Now this selecting-reloading-selecting procedure for that single page takes many minutes to complete. Multiply that with the number of users (a lot) and the number of use times per day (a lot) and you’re basically throwing money out of the window.

Enter Flex. Convert that page of the app to MXML, make it reload the contents of the drop-downs without reloading the whole page and: voila! You’re one-hour effort just saved hundreds of hours work-time every freakin’ month. Simple.

  • Of course this particular functionality can easily be done with AJAX for a whole lot less money.

  • Less money for tools or developer time?

Studio 8 promo lookalike

Aug 9, 2005   //   by Tuomas Artman   //  No Comments

What are the chances? Take a look at the two pictures below. The first one is from a web-site called Nylanderi, which we created about a year ago. The second one is from Studio 8: Meet Your Match, promoting Studio 8.

We of course had a much crappier video codec without alpha channel support, but it’s amazing how two seperate agencies can come up with quiet the same look and feel. Even the aspect ration is almost the same. And I’m sure that whoever did the Studio 8-site has never actaully  seen Nylanderi. Amazing!

Studio 8

Aug 1, 2005   //   by Tuomas Artman   //  1 Comment

Rumors say that Flash 8 would be reveiled next monday, 8.8. Just yesterday I received an email through the partner program inviting me to an breeze-event regarding Studio 8. The event will be held tomorrow, so it certainly looks as if Macromedia is really close to launch Flash 8 and related software.
